Our Story
Teemaneng Arts and Tourism Organization (TATO) was established on the 20 February 2019. The center is situated in Galeshewe Location, in Greater Number 2 location, at the Sol Plaatje Local Municipality under the Frances Baard District Municipality in the Northern Cape Province. Galeshewe is ± 05 kilometers outside Kimberley town. The center is registered as an NPC.
TATO is an alternative, community-based response that minimizes the impact of poverty and encourages young people to actively participate in local economic growth initiatives. TATO is a community-based model of care, which enhances youth access to employment and skills training development programmes in the arts and tourism sectors. The main aim is to create much needed activity and boost our township economy by creating Art Spaces at Heritage and Tourism sites around the historic Galeshewe and Greater No2 location one of the oldest Townships in South Africa, with historical figures like Solomon Plaatje, Charlotte Maxeke, ZK Matthews, Gideon Nxumalo and Robert Sobukwe to mention but a few names of leaders that used to call Galeshewe home.
Breathing life into places like the Mayibuye Uprising Precinct where the first uprising took place on the 8th November 1952 and also home to the Mangaliso Robert Sobukwe office & museum, the Abantu Hall and police station building, historic monuments that are ideal spaces to be earmarked to host artistic activities to develop and capacitate young people. Our flagship initiatives is the restoration and management of the Mayibuye Uprising Precinct. Launching of the heritage route walking trails and bicycle tours and the restoration and preservation of heritage houses and infrastructure. The oral history research and documentation project that aims to preserve and archive our rich but yet undocumented stories.
